A Movement Built on Purpose
Women in Alternative Dispute Resolution (WADR) a non-profit organization launched on the 18th November 2020. Since it’s inception, WADR had been paying way for Women from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds to excel in the field of ADR. Our mission is to empower and elevate women practitioners in the field of ADR, providing them with the support and opportunities to excel in their careers. Our vision
is inclusivity and diversity in ADR.
Through relentless dedication and unwavering commitment, we strive to deliver ADR as the preferred mechanism for resolving disputes. With our slogan, ‘Positioning Women in ADR’, we offer support in the journey towards becoming accomplished ADR practitioners while underscoring the objective ofdelivering ADR as the preferred dispute resolution mechanism. Justice Joyce Aluoch
Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch, CBS, EBS, Trailblazer, Former Judge and First Vice-President, International Criminal Court(ICC), The Hague, The Netherlands. Certified International Mediator (IMI), Accredited Mediator, Certified Advanced Mediator, Chartered Mediator. Member, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators-London (global), and the Kenya Branch.
She holds a Master of Arts Degree (GMAP) from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University in Boston-USA, Law Degree from the University of Nairobi- Kenya, and a Professional Certificate from the Kenya School of Law. Prior to her election as a Judge and First-Vice President at the ICC, she was a Judge of the Court of Appeal and High Court in Kenya, and Magistrate, having been the second woman in Kenya to hold those positions. She served on the bench for a total of 44 years, 35 in Kenya and 9 at the International Criminal Court.
Upon conclusion of her term at the ICC in 2018, she successfully moved her legal profession to other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution, particularly mediation. She conducts international and continental mediations, Court Annexed Mediations in Kenya, and private mediations.
In July 2022, she was appointed by Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), to be the Vice-Chair of Judicial Reform Committee under the Revitalized (power sharing) Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, a country that had been in conflict for almost 20 years. Being a seasoned Mediator, Lady Justice Aluoch used her mediation skills to conduct public consultations in most parts of South Sudan to establish the reforms the people wanted in the judiciary. The Committee concluded the assignment and handed over the final report to His Exceffency President Salva Kiir Mayardit, The President of South Sudan at state house in Juba on December 20, 2024. In January 2024, she was appointed a member of the Jury of the Simplicemente Donna International Award and in March 2024, she was appointed to the Global Advisory Council of G100 Networking.
The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (global) appointed her a member of the Peer Review Panel in July 2024, and by December 2024, the Institute upgraded her appointment to the Membership of Professional Review Conduct which investigates, and if necessary, facilitates disciplinary and or expulsion of any member through an independent and impartial system of disciplinary proceedings.
Lady Justice Aluoch serves in many international and regional organizations. She is the co- chair of the Board of Directors of Mediators Beyond Borders International(MBBI), Board Member of Dialogue Through Conflict Foundation, Patron, Women in Alternative Dispute Resolution-Kenya, and the immediate past member of International Advisory Board, Office of the Ombudsman of the United Nations Funds and Programs.
She is a recipient of both International and National Awards including International Peace Award from Premio Internazionale Simplicente Donna, awarded in Florence-Italy in November 2023. This was in recognition of the work she had done and was continuing to do in promoting peace in South Sudan even as she was busy undertaking judicial reforms. Finally, are the Awards she has received both internationally and Nationally, for example, International Peace Award from Premio Internazionale Semplicente Donna, awarded in Florence-Italy in November, 2023, for promoting peace using mediation, and in Kenya, the National Awards of CBS, EBS and Trail Blazer, Awarded by the last three Presidents of Kenya, for professionalism in her long judicial career.
Eunice Lumallas
Corporate and Trial Lawyer, International arbitrator and mediator; Kenya’s representative at the International Centre for Settlement of International Disputes (ICSID) Washington DC (2022-2026) (Conciliation Panel) Member Public Private Partnerships Petitions Committee (PPPPC), African Arbitration Association (AfAA) and Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal (ADT). Listed in several panels for Arbitration and mediation including the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration, The Mediation and Arbitration Centre Mauritius, and Kigali Centre for International Arbitration in East Africa. Advocate of the High Court and partner at LAK Advocates, Tutor and Trainer of law and Alternative Dispute Resolution, a qualified Patent Agent, Commissioner for Oaths and a Notary Public and Chairperson of Women in Alternative Resolution (WADR).
Florence Shako
Sylvia Kasanga
Dr. Arch. Sylvia Mueni Kasanga, FCIArb, is a distinguished international dispute resolution practitioner, arbitrator, and built-environment professional with over twenty-three (23) years of cross‑disciplinary practice spanning architecture, construction management, public policy, and international arbitration.
She holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Dispute Resolution from Queen Mary University of London, in addition to being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). Her professional profile is uniquely positioned at the intersection of law, construction, and governance, with deep expertise in construction disputes, infrastructure contracts, FIDIC-based adjudication, and complex commercial arbitration.
Dr. Kasanga is a practicing arbitrator, tribunal member, and ADR trainer with extensive experience handling high‑value construction and infrastructure disputes, including disputes involving government entities, multilateral-funded projects, and private sector actors. She has served as a sole arbitrator, party‑appointed arbitrator, Dispute Adjudication Board (DAB) member, and mediator in matters involving final accounts, delayed payments, defects liability, contract termination, and quality of works. Her arbitration portfolio includes disputes with quantum values exceeding KES 2.5 billion.
She is a Court Member of the ICC Court of Arbitration (Paris), a Director of ICC Kenya, a Director of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Kenya Branch), and an Arbitrator and Trainer with the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration (NCIA). She also serves on the Executive Committee of Women in ADR (WADR), contributing to capacity building and gender inclusion in international dispute resolution.
In parallel, Dr. Kasanga is the Founder and Managing Director of Sycum Solutions LLP, an architectural and construction management firm with over two decades of professional practice. As a registered architect, she has led major residential, mixed‑use, institutional, and infrastructure projects valued in the billions of shillings, giving her practical, technical insight that strongly informs her arbitral reasoning in construction and engineering disputes.
Her governance and leadership experience is equally notable. She is the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Lukenya University, a Board Member of Lukenya Group of Schools, Founder Trustee of the Pan‑African Institute Africa, and Founder President of The Architects Alliance (TAA), where she leads advocacy on professional standards, built‑environment governance, and dispute resolution reform across Africa.
Dr. Kasanga previously served as a Senator of the Parliament of Kenya (2017–2022), during
which she sponsored and championed key legislation, including the Alternative Dispute Resolution Bill, and contributed to national policy discourse on infrastructure, land, and public accountability. This legislative experience provides her with rare insight into public law dimensions of arbitration, state contracts, and regulatory disputes.
She is a frequent speaker, moderator, and trainer at regional and international arbitration conferences, including ICC Africa Conferences, Africa Construction Law Conferences, Paris Arbitration Week, and Nairobi Arbitration Week. Her scholarly contributions include peer‑reviewed publications on dispute resolution in the construction industry.
Dr. Kasanga brings to arbitration a rare blend of legal scholarship, technical construction expertise, public governance experience, and international institutional exposure. She is widely regarded as a trusted neutral in complex construction, infrastructure, commercial, and public‑interest disputes across Africa and beyond.
